Are there particular films that have influenced your writing?

It’s more like what film has not influenced my writing. I’m a shameless aficionado of film, television, and books. I was practically weaned on it. As such, I utilize many pop-cultural references in my nonfictional writings. While some may consider that taboo, I find film, TV, and pop cultural references relatable and, quite frankly, more fun. Such references help underscore a point or help drive a message home. So, when discussing various wellness topics and citing tons of scientific research, the references add an element of fun and levity. I try to present clinically driven findings in a way that is palatable and enjoyable. As Mary Poppins harmonized throughout my childhood: “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down,” and I took that to heart.

Favorite non-reading activity?

At the moment, my answer is Pilates. Or anything physical, for that matter. I had spinal surgery earlier in the year, and the rehabilitation was grueling. I was in a hard brace for 12 weeks, so being able to move in any capacity is a source of happiness for me. The surgery was a reboot and wake-up call in many ways, as it truly made me appreciate my body more. To not take little things for granted. To have a greater appreciation of being able to move and be flexible. And nothing like back surgery to make you realize core strength is everything! Pilates is wonderful at doing just and doing so in a way that is kind to your body.

Not all books are for all readers… when you start a book and you just don’t like it, how long do you read until you bail?

Reading is one of my favorite ways to relax. Like most parents, I feel like I’m always going in a million different directions, so when I have the opportunity to sit and read, I don’t take it lightly. So, I can be very particular about the reading experience, and if a book doesn’t grab me by the 3rd chapter, I will typically move on to greener literary pastures. I love books that I do not want to put down and will stay up far past bedtime to keep reading. I’m aware that can be a tall order, but it’s what I look for in a book.

What brings you great joy?

It’s my children. Full stop. They are just so magical and never cease to amaze me. I’m grateful that we have such a beautiful relationship. To watch them grow and become young adults has been such a privilege to witness.

What piece of clothing tells the most interesting story about your life?

Well, I don’t know about the most interesting, but some of my favorite pieces are my Philadelphia Phillies t-shirts. Like most Philly dwellers, I’m a die-hard fan. I’ve loved baseball since I was little, and my father took us to the games. There is just something so romantic and wondrous about the game. I scream at the TV and jump up and down during clutch moments, causing my dogs to run for cover. It’s like part of our DNA here. Game wear is where it’s at!!!
