Ever since Esme discovered Nancy Drew, she's wanted to solve mysteries. As a mystery author, she's finally found a way to make that dream come true. Esme lives in Raleigh, NC with her family. When she's not writing or dreaming up new mysteries for her sleuths to stumble upon, you can find her dancing her calories away in Zumba, patronizing her local bookstores or visiting the beach, the mountains and all historical sites in between.

Is there a work of art that you love. Why? Have you ever visited it in person?

My series the Enchanted Bay Mysteries is based on the Mermaid of Warsaw myth. I wrote the first book before I ever went to Poland but I viewed as many pictures of the Mermaid of Warsaw statues that I could. When I went to Poland, I visited many of the statues I saw online including one of the most famous if not the largest statue located by the Swietokrzyski Bridge. I took pictures in front of it. It was a significant moment for me – I’ve done so much research on the myth, looked at so many of the mermaid’s likeness… it was wonderful to actually go to Poland and see the statue in person.

Vacation druthers… City or Rural destination? Why?

It depends on my mood and my needs for that vacation – relaxation or adventure. Either way, it’s almost always rural – an undeveloped beach or a small town in the mountains. I love the slower pace, the architectural history of rural destinations, the dirt, the trees, the people, the food… Big cities have their charms too. Rome is probably my favorite big city but the Italian countryside is also amazing.

Not all books are for all readers… when you start a book and you just don’t like it, how long do you read until you bail?

Three or five pages. Not long at all. I know my tastes and interests and if there’s not an instant connection with the voice, tone and writing style, I know I can’t force it.

Is there another profession you would like to try?

If I wasn’t a writer of mysteries, I’d probably want to actually solve mysteries. So… CIA operative? FBI agent? Seriously, that’s what it would be… probably for the best that I only write about it though. lol

What brings you great joy?

Sitting on the beach watching the ocean waves roll in and back out.
