I graduated with a nursing and sociology degree at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. I immigrated to Canada in 1979 with my husband and sons. I obtained my master's in health administration at Central Michigan University. Before retirement, I worked in healthcare, primarily in palliative and mental health.

My husband and I completed three extensive overland travels, driving over fifty thousand miles across Africa. We also drove from Alaska to Argentina. I currently live in Calgary, Canada, with my husband and family.

Favorite non-reading activity?

I love the freedom of independent travel and camping in the wilderness. My husband and I drove a Land Cruiser with a rooftop tent in Africa. We never knew what the day held for us, what we'd see and experience, or who we'd meet. At times, travel was difficult, but the rewards were significant. Our trips enriched not only our lives but also our marriage.

When not traveling, I work out at least twice a week with a trainer, including lifting weights. I walk my dog daily, even when it's -22 degrees Fahrenheit and snowing.

Vacation druthers… City or Rural destination? Why?

If I had to choose, it would be rural and, even better, the wilderness. Cities obviously can be fascinating, especially in foreign countries. I enjoy learning about different cultures, traditions, rituals, and foods. The world is fascinating; every country has something to offer, and I have learned much. I prefer to go somewhere I have never been to to explore new locations.

Is there another profession you would like to try?

Oh yes, I would love to be a National Geographic photographer and travel the world.

What brings you great joy?

Writing and photography bring me joy. I have had a camera in my hands since I was a child. My grandfather was a photographer and encouraged me to learn about photography. I especially love wildlife photography and was lucky to go on a photography course with a National Geographic photographer.

Do you speak another language? Do you think differently in that language? Does it influence your writing?

I speak Afrikaans, a South African language. I do think differently in Afrikaans. Most of my friends growing up in South Africa spoke Afrikaans. Some phrases and words are unique to Afrikaans, which seem more expressive than English.

I would wish, in my next life, to be a polyglot. Understanding what is being said by a foreigner is priceless, especially when asking for directions or assistance, which could be challenging, especially when the script is different, such as Arabic or Amharic.
