Are there particular films that have influenced your writing?

When I was writing my first book I watched (and read) Pride and Prejudice a lot to set the tone. They are set in the same period. Research purposes. Vernacular. That sort of thing.

Is there a genre of music that influences your writing/thinking? Do you listen to music while you write?

Yes. Rock, from alternative to post-hardcore to metal, there’s almost always rock music playing in my earholes to set the tone in my head. All my books have a soundtrack.

Favorite non-reading activity?

I love hiking in the mountains. It satisfies all the senses and it doesn’t feel as brutal and nagging as exercise sometimes does.

Do you have another artistic outlet in addition to your writing? Do you sew? Paint? Draw? Knit? Dance?

I love the arts. All of them. My kids dance and play instruments. Personally I crochet. I play guitar and sing. I paint when the mood strikes.

What piece of clothing tells the most interesting story about your life?

I wouldn’t call it the MOST interesting story, but one I love to tell is about my left rubber boot. It was raining when I went to a music festival to see Alexisonfire, so I wore my rubber boots. When they started playing, I got caught in the crush, and someone stepped on my boot. It went one way, I went the other. I spent the rest of the concert in only my right boot, and then watched as someone tossed my boot (rolled down black boot with green sole, totally recognizable) onto the stage between Dallas and George. Their roadie tossed stuff back off the stage as the concert went on and I did get it back. It’s my favourite article of clothing for that reason.
